Executive Order 13769

On March 6, 2017, President Donald J. Trump issued Executive Order 13780, Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States, which declared that “it is the policy of the United States to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks, including those committed by foreign nationals,” and directed a series of actions to enhance the security of the American people.

In January 2018,  the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on the latest version of the travel ban and on June 26, 2018, voted (in a 5-to-4 vote) to uphold the constitutionality of the third version of the Muslim ban. The Court held that the President was within his authority when he blocked travel from several Muslim-majority countries.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, delivering the dissent, said, “Taking all the relevant evidence together, a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was driven primarily by anti-Muslim animus, rather than by the Government’s asserted national-security justifications.”

“We need to protect the country and lives from    Muslims and terrorists.” -President Trump

Dubbed the “Muslim Travel Ban”, Executive Order 13769 originally targeted seven predominantly Muslim countries. Several countries were later added targeting areas where Muslim minorities were fleeing genocide or to avoid legal push back from the Immigration Nationality Act.

The Muslim travel ban created massive human suffering, separated tens of thousands of U.S. citizens and legal residents from their families, denied medical treatment to those in desperate need, ended professional and educational opportunities, and deprived U.S. employers of valued employees.
